Mopoke and Morepork!

This is the tail, and feathers, of two cousins. One lives across the ditch (Tasman sea) in New Zealand, the other in Australia.. Now these two winged creatures of the Owl family are distinct one from another as you will see, not just in size or appearance but in....well you read for yourself, I think you'll get the gist of it..BTW I'm the Narrator :)

Mopoke and MorePork!

Our Story begins pretty much like any other story..In the lush fertile bush lands, amid the mist, neath the mountains.....

"Oi Can you just get on with the story, squawk Mo and More"?

"Fine, I was just trying to give you a decent intro, but it's your call, "says me the Narrator :)

Now Mo has just flapped in on a good tail wind from across the sea, and so he finds More, sitting in his perch in the bush..
and they greet each other with the usual courtesies of close cousins.

"G'day More, how's me little mate gettin on, out here in the middle of nowhere."
"Yeah good Mo, nice of you to just drop in like this, and a bit less of the little if you don't mind eh!"

"Nice pair of birds aren't they!!

"So what brings you over to my neck of the woods, at this time of the night eh Mo," says More wryly! "Miss me did yah"?

"Oh no, you know, just looking for something to do, thought I'd stretch me Big long feathers out," says Mo with a distinct air of superiority!

"Typical, you just can't admit that you miss me, and our conversations can yah," More clucks with a snicker." So what's happening over the ditch Mo? Anything interestin?"

"Nah mate" says Mo, shuffling about," same old same old. "Ere I have had something pressing on my mind though, that I wanted to ask you"

More of course is expecting a controversial question, as he knows his cousin well and thinks to himself, I bet we are in for another big noting session here tonight.

"Oi I haven't indicated that I am thinking any such thing.says More, "No and I haven't either" says Mo"

"Well, if you want I can just move on, you can write this story yourselves!! "No alright," they both chime in, "go on, jumpin the gun as usual"

I know these two birds, so I know what's coming haha!.

"More, about that night call of yours!"

" Oh yeah, what about it, MO?"

"Well, it's occurred to me that it's a bit, errr odd, for want of a better word, Mo chirps."

"Nothing odd about it, clucks More, indignantly, it's been the call of our ancestors for hundreds of years, in fact I believe it was actually noted in the Guinness book of records as being the most eeeerrieee night call.."

"Take a breath there little mate, speels Mo, you'll wind yourself"

"Not amused" says More, and begins to preen his feathers furiously!

"Can you get your head outa your feathers for a minute and just listen to me when I'm talking to you," says Mo with a leer on his face!

"What and listen to you prattle on about my perculiar night call, Huh, says More with an equally silly look on his face!

"Ah not nice there, if you don't mind..."OOOOPS sorry, just and observation, says narrator smiling.

"Alright Mo, get it off your chest, you're gonna bug me all night anyway, so let's just be having it" sighs More.

"Well don't you think that calling out Pork is a bit, you know, odd"

Nuffin odd about it, why should it be odd, name one thing that's odd about it, go on I bet you can't?

"HAHA,"Chuckles Mo, "two right it's odd, I mean who is going to take Pork seriously, and besides it dosent really mean anything, "Mo sneers, at his smaller and more feisty cousin.

"Well if you think that Pork dosent represent anything in particular, then what do you call, Poke, eh," says More, Poking fun at Mo, literally!

"Let me tell you what it represents, it means, aaaamm, well it means that at least I am poking around looking for food," says More assuredly.

"Oooh, chirps More, is that what it means, and all this time, I thought you just couldn't pronounce Pork properly,  he says with a laugh!

"Now that will be enough cheek outa you, you of the smaller species." "Why does it have to be Pork anyway, like, can't you say Lamb, I mean to say, there's no shortage of them around here, is there," says Mo calmly!

By this time the heated exchange between these extreemly close cousins is rather excited and loud, so any interjectory remarks that I make at this point will more than likely be lost on them!! haha, I like being the Narrator!

" Right that's it, I'm telling you that my call is appropriate, there's nothing wrong with it" says More, Jumping up and down and flapping excitedly on his perch, "besides there are plenty of wild bush pigs around here," he huffs!

"All right all right little mate, says Mo, in such a condescending tone, that aggravates More even...More," Don't get you're feathers all in a flap"

"Pork, pork,  Ok"

"And I'm not little either, just finer built, thanks!"

" Are so, chirp chirp"

" Am not"

" R so," says Mo and pats More on the head"

"Not little, and it's Pork," More retorts loudly.

"ARE SO, and it's lamb," Mo chimes back!.

And so it goes, on through the night, where even the screech owl takes flight. So if you happen to be out hunting on a crisp cool night, and hear the sound of Lamb, or Pork mentioned, in an eeeerrriee tone, like the distant call to a smorgasboard dinner, don't worry, it's just these pair, arguing as usual over nothing, in the heart of the lush fertile bush lands, amid the mist, neath the mountainous, rugged, undulating terrain of the shores known as Aotearoa! There I said it, Nice to have the last word, isn't it!

" You could talk underwater with a mouthful of marbles"

The Three Polar Bears

Where did he learn that word?

Once upon a time....

No no, lets try a New begininng, that one has been flogged to death..

One Crisp Spring morning, as the First flickering rays of the remote sunshine appeared over the mountains far away on the horizon, Baby Bear stretched and yawned!

Now because it was spring, he was only just born a short time beforehand, and of course everything in his surrounds were as brand new as the fluffy white hair on his little hide.

Poppa Bear gave an almighty Growl as he too stretched forth, and exclamined in a loud gruff voice, "aaaaaaaaaaaaah it's Spring Momma, time to get about and find something to eat for our breakfast"!

Momma Bear, knowing that her beloved spouse was right in these matters, and even if he was not, agreed with him anyway, for it was always easier to get along, well lets face it, he was a rather large Polar Bear.

Baby Bear winced, shivering a little as though something had just walked over his skin, though he knew  that it was not wise to show how uncomfortable he was presently. He thought it best to make an effort to growl like his big poppa, and join in the daily hunting and fishing activities. He was also rather hungry!

Today however, Momma had different idea's, and before baby Bear could gather himself up and trundle off after his Poppa, Momma spoke in her soft voice, as all momma bears do to their young offspring saying "I want you to stay here around the house today Jnr, I need you to guard our home"!

"Oh", exclaimed Baby Bear, do I really have to"?. "Yes Son, you really have to today, it's all part of the training we spoke about last night, do you remember?"

"Yes said Jnr, reluctantly, I remember, I know what I have to do today, it's ok, I will be fine here by myself for a little while while you and Poppa go off and find a fish for my breakfast"! "Good good," said Momma, just stay quiet, lay low, keep your head down, and keep watch, you know what to do if someone comes sniffing around, we will not be long."

She kissed him on his furry little neck, and with a wave of her large paw set off behind her Husband, who looked back just once to make sure his Son was doing as his Momma had asked, and off they set upon the ice, till they were out of sight, and Baby Bear was all alone.

At first he felt very uneasy, it was so bright outside the little cabin they had made for themselves to live in. Poppa was so very clever he thought, to of made such a neat house to live in during the colder months before he was born. :" I wanna grow up to be just like my Poppa", he thought, he is so brave!

Sometime later, perhaps ten minutes later, Baby Bear had grown bored with his situation, and started to fidget. Then he fidgeted some more, moving his position over and over, till boredom gave rise to curiosity, as something in the distance caught his eye.

At first thought, being the correct thought, he knew that it would be wrong to go over yonder and find out what that thing was that had caught his eye, he recalled his Momma's words, though by now curiosity was eating away at him much more than his hungry belly.

He looked again at the object of his interest, then with typical Baby bear inclinations, threw all caution to the four winds, and left the safety of the home environment, setting off to find out what was that thing over the horizon, he could hardly contain himself.

Unfortunately the horizon was not that far away, so the journey was relatively short, for if it had of been a long walk, he surely would not of made it.. Especially on an empty tummy. He gave a fleeting thought once more to his Momm'as words, but as the wind and left over snow flakes settled on his nose, before melting in the warm sunshine, he thought no more, and scampered on over to the horizon, in awe of what it could be.

As he neared the large object, he suddenly pulled up short. A loud blasting sound resounded in his poor wee ears, that quite literally knocked him back on his!

"ooow he winced heavily, ooooow oowww, that hurt, was was that"!

What the young Polar bear didnt realize was that some explosives had been detonated in that spot on the horizon, and there was large upright equipment there too, with another strange looking object that seemed to go right underneath the snow.

This he mused was almost like his Poppa's big stick that he used for poking at the fish under the ice, but so much bigger it made his mind boggle. All of a sudden he saw some other creatures, that he did not know existed. His Momma had not had time to explain to him about these creatures. He knew about the Penquin famiies, the seal families, and even the Killer whales that came and went in their season, but this was very different.

Wracked with curiosity, he sat on the ice, and watched, and watched, and watched. He heard so many sounds, some coming from the creatures, some coming from the machinery, though he was glad he did not hear another one of those big bangs again, they were altogether way too loud for his ears.

Baby bear was feeling very uncomfortable after a while, as his new born fur often needed to stay close to Momma.. He was after all, still very very young. Shivering in his skin, each time the creatures made a certain sound, the same sound, over and over, he wondered if that sound was meant to make Polar bears feel cold.

Suddenly a chill came upon him, a gull flew over head shrieking, snapping Baby bear back to reality, his reality, which was that he was not supposed to be where he was, and ought to hurry on back to the home before he was discovered missing by his parents.

Gathering himself up, he hurried on across the ice, getting up such a fast pace that he was able to do the skidding trick that Momma and Poppa were so good at, and had taught him just the day before. This was fun, much more fun than sitting there in the cold, watching that awful big spiral stick going further and further into the ice.

Soon he found himself back home again, within the confines of safety, and just in time, for he had barely sat down outside his icy cabin, when he spotted his parents emerging. Poppa with a great big fish in his mouth, Momma, with one in hers.

Oh joy he chuckled, breakfast is on the way, I can hardly wait. Yum Yum fish, I love fresh fish for breakfast. Oh, he thought I better not tell my parents where I have been, or they will scold me badly, and I do not want to miss out on that fish, his tummy grumbling loudly by this time!

Momma' and Poppa arrived back at the cabin, greeted him with a hearty growl, Momma nudged him with her face, as her mouth was full of fish, and Poppa just nodded, thinking to himself, what a good Son I have!!

After their hearty breakfast of fish, the three sat down together to talk over the days events thus far, and to plan for the rest of the day. Suddenly Baby bear felt that unusual chill he had felt before, while he was over by the big spiral stick.

Momma noticed his shiver, and asked of her son," are you alright Jnr?" "yes I'm ok Momma he replied with much hesitancy in his voice, that instantly tweaked Momma's interest, as it does with all Momma's!

"Are you sure you are alright Jnr, you seem a little out of sorts, was the fish enough for your breakfast"? " yes Momma he replied, I am full, and it was delish Momma, but".: Go on Momma replied what is it Jnr, speak your mind"!

"Well Momma, he started out, with a nervous rattle in his voice, Momma, am I a REAL Polar Bear"? "What Crackled Momma, what did you say"? " Did I hear you correctly" Realizing that he had upset his Momma, he decided to say nothing more, though by now Poppa had picked up on the conversation, and was making his way closer towards his son, after stashing away the leftover fish, that they would use later on for lunch.

"What's all this then, he announced, what have you said to your momma"? By now Jnr was fairly shivering in his bearskin to the point where his claws were turning blue, but he knew he better answer his Poppa, smartly!!

Instead of trying to explain, he asked the question again. "Poppa, am I a real Polar bear"? Poppa looked at him with a smirk on his face, while Jnr continued. "No brown bear or grizzly bear in me is there"? " No Son, you are a real Polar bear, WHY"?

"I'm Fracking Cold"
